Tyrell is a young African-American teen who can't get a break. He's living (for now) with his spaced-out mother and little brother in a homeless shelter. His father's in jail. His girlfriend supports him, but he doesn't feel good enough for her -- and seems to be always on the verge of doing the wrong thing around her. There's another girl at the homeless shelter who is also after him, although the desires there are complicated. Tyrell feels he needs to score some money to make things better. Will he end up following in his father's footsteps?

"Tyrell" touched my heart2010-08-235 / 5
I'm a high school teacher who teaches reluctant readers. This book, along with Paranoid Park by Blake Nelson, is one of the first books a lot of my students have ever read.

I have read this book about five times, and I am very attached to the character of Tyrell. I feel like he's a real person, and when you feel that a character is real, for me that's one of the indicators that the book is excellent.

I won't rehash the plot, but I'll just mention what I loved about the book:

--Language and situations were completely realistic. More conservative parents and teachers may want to avoid this book, but for me, this is one of the things that makes this book so incredible and special.

--The descriptions of the settings were unbelievable (in a good way.) Whether I was at Tyrell's homeless shelter, his girlfriend's house, or at a party he was DJing, I could imagine myself there.

--Tyrell was a very well developed character. Booth is not afraid to make him sweet and vulnerable, yet tough and dark at the same time.

--As an aspiring YA Urban author myself, this book was a real inspiration to me. It is obvious that it was a true labor of love for Booth. No YA book has affected me in the way that Tyrell has.
A Real Good Book2010-07-214 / 5
I said to myself I was going to stop reading these "young adult" books as a few of the others I had read - I just didn't enjoy them that much, but I'm happy, I picked up this book. It's a story about a 15 year old boy who basically has to become an adult by force, he had no choice. He had responsibilities that a "normal" 15 year old boy shouldn't even have to worry about at that age. For a first novel, I think Coe Booth did a great job. The pace of the story was just right and at times you would feel like you are a part of the story. I think this is another one of these stories that make you grateful for being in fortunate situations, unlike the protagonist. Towards the end of the story, that is when it hit me. This story is really ending, I was like "There better be a sequel!" and to my knowledge, there will be , so I am definitely going to be getting it. I think this is like my 3rd favorite book so far, for real, it's a really good book.
Loved it!!!!!!2009-11-235 / 5
I bought this and other of the series because my two grandsons ages 12 and 13 just simply loves them. I believe they cand empathize with some of the characters or atleast know someone in these situations. They not only empathize but they also sympathize also.
This book is the best!!!!2009-03-315 / 5
I'm a student in Victoria Morse's class and this a review of a book she bought for me, the title of the book is Tyrell. The reason why I like this book so much is because it can relate to teenagers my age "14". This story takes place in the streets of New York, the main characters are Tyrell and his girlfriend Novisha. The thing that I find most interesting about this book is how Tyrell and his mom struggle and he still tends to live his life normal and smile.
Sets its sights too low2008-11-301 / 5
I have read many books in juvenile fiction and I am constantly looking for titles that will speak to and inspire students in my class. Some excellent books which are read passionately by my inner city students include Street Pharm, Money Hungry, Slam, and True Notebooks.

I realize that the main character, Tyrell, lives a difficult life, but I was so sad to see that the story essentially condones oral sex among minors. While this may be a reality, I believe it sets our sights too low when we are trying to encourage youth to be safe, responsible, and fight for an education instead of falling into the trap of instant gratification.

This could have been an entertaining story which gave voice to an important perspective. Unfortunately, I believe it will ultimately encourage kids to make choices which are not the best for them. I'm a minority teacher who loves working in liberal Berkeley, but in good conscience, I could not give this book to a student. The author has a nice way with words and dialogue. I look forward to her future work and hope it sets its sights a little higher.
