The Ghost Brigades are the Special Forces of the Colonial Defense Forces, elite troops created from the DNA of the dead and turned into the perfect soldiers for the CDF's toughest operations. They're young, they're fast and strong, and they're totally without normal human qualms.

The universe is a dangerous place for humanity--and it's about to become far more dangerous. Three races that humans have clashed with before have allied to halt our expansion into space. Their linchpin: the turncoat military scientist Charles Boutin, who knows the CDF's biggest military secrets. To prevail, the CDF must find out why Boutin did what he did.

Jared Dirac is the only human who can provide answers -- a superhuman hybrid, created from Boutin's DNA, Jared's brain should be able to access Boutin's electronic memories. But when the memory transplant appears to fail, Jared is given to the Ghost Brigades.

At first, Jared is a perfect soldier, but as Boutin's memories slowly surface, Jared begins to intuit the reason's for Boutin's betrayal. As Jared desperately hunts for his "father," he must also come to grips with his own choices. Time is running out: The alliance is preparing its offensive, and some of them plan worse things than humanity's mere military defeat…

continuation of the story from "Old Man's War"2010-08-294 / 5
I couldn't exactly call "The Ghost Brigades" a sequel to "Old Man's War". It's set in the same universe, and there's a little bit of overlap in the characters (although the protagonist of "Old Man's War" is nowhere to be found in here, other than a small nod to him in the rising action to the novel's climax), and it's obviously set after "Old Man's War". I think you could pick up "The Ghost Brigades" without having read "Old Man's War". Both are good books, so I'd read them both, but I don't think you'd lose anything if you read them out of order.

The ghost brigades of the title are a genetically-engineered army of superhumans designed to fight in a harsh universe. The concept of ghost brigades had been introduced in "Old Man's War" and is thoroughly explored here: how they came into being, how they are able to fight, and how they continue to be engineered to better fight humanity's enemies. The story centres around what happens when the chief researcher responsible for the ghost brigade program goes rogue.

Charles Boutin does what is thought to be impossible, and manages to store his own consciousness. Then he turns against humanity and joins up with three other races who are trying to eradicate humanity from the universe. Upon discovering this, the best chance to stop him is to try to resurrect his consciousness into a new body. This seems unsuccessful, so we see this new person named Jared and sent to fight with the rest of the ghost brigades. But the consciousness did take, and finally Jared has access to Charles' memories and, more importantly, motivations. Jared manages to retain his own sense of self, and helps bring about the end of a bloody battle between humanity and those set against it.
Good 2nd book in the Old Man's War series2010-08-274 / 5
The sequel to Old Man's War is more along the lines of within the same universe, but it is a very entertaining novel that kept me turning page after page. I like that John Scalzi has expanded the world he has created, and created additional depth and background. Jane Sagan is back from the first novel, though there are not really any new revelations about her character.

Overall, a very entertaining read. Not as good or fresh as Old Man's War, but I'm eager to read the next book in the series.
Poor kindle conversion2010-08-232 / 5
Loved the first book, Old Man's War. On the Kindle, it was a fun read. I downloaded the sample for The Ghost Brigades, and was shocked at the poor quality of the conversion. It looks like a really bad xerox copy, with words out of alignment, and pixelated fonts. Love the Kindle app, and I prefer it because I can read on other devices, but I am buying this one on iBooks, because it is actually legible. Come on , I expect better.

By the way, enjoying book so far..hey it's a trilogy, you gatt a read the second book, right?
The Ghost Brigades2010-06-155 / 5
I've only read a few of the reviews of this book before deciding to read the book itself. I really enjoyed the first book, but was a bit hesitant to start a sequel with more of the same. More of the same would not be a bad thing, I just wanted to read something different before returning to this series.

Although set in the same universe, The Ghost Brigades was very different. This story has far more depth to it than the expected intense battle scenes Scalzi did so well with in the first book. We are given a glimpse of a threat that could result in the extermination of all humanity. We are introduced to Jared Dirac, a new member of the special forces and a pawn on a big chessboard. The role he plays (and is forced to play) and the changes to his personality is described in a very skillful fashion. He learns to make choices where there are no choices. The missions that special forces are given are very intense and brutal.

I really had trouble setting this book down. I really wasn't sure how it would all turn out and I wanted to know. In my opinion, this sequel surpasses the first book. I'm ready to try another of this series to see if Scalzi can hit yet one more home run.
Like the Old Man's War, but not at all2010-06-104 / 5
A good change from the first book. You are familiar with the material and what is going on, but Scalzi makes it sound like a whole new concept...brainpal on steroids
