    What Threat?2010-03-041 / 5
It's been almost a decade since I read this silly book, and since you're probably wondering why I'm reviewing it now, I'll make it the first part of the review.

I was in Broadway Books (a quaint little mom-and-pop bookstore on the Upper West Side) and I saw a whole bunch of old books from the Cold War. They were all about the great "threat" posed by the USSR, and obviously written before 1990. As we all know, almost every work written about the USSR during the Cold War was wrong. Few American writers had visited the USSR, and her military/industrial power had never been accurately assessed. So it got me thinking about books that cause a stir, then turn out to be wrong.

The China Threat is an example of such a work. In the late 1990's, China's economic growth put many of us on edge. Could she rival the USA? Would she destroy us, with cannons or cash? With bombs or bonds? China's government purchased vast US Treasury securities, which could be seen as investment in safety or an attempt to control the US economy. What would that mean for the USA?

I didn't belive this book when I read it. The author made a big stink about China buying shares in the Panama Canal. I wasn't frightned; so what if China bought the Panama Canal? They'd be unlikely to close the canal to US ships. Even if they did, the US could still retaliate with a devastating boycott of Chinese-made goods. The bulk of China's weaponry comes from the USA, and if the US refused to sell them weapons, they'd have to rely on their own inferior designs.

Henry Kissinger was interviewed on his thoughts on the alleged "menace" of China. His response; there isn't any threat! Kissinger says that China's population, thanks to the One-Child policy, is aging rapidly. The young population has shrunk, which essentialy means that China is a nation of the old. Since the preference is for boys, that offsets the balance of work ethics. It also shrinks the pool of available workers and soldiers. As the Chinese population is shrinking, their government will have a harder time controling Tibet and the Turkic-speaking areas.

The bottom line is, we were afraid over nothing. Beware when reading these tomes; they are often arbitrary and based on speculation, not research or experience.

This should be a must read for all Amercians. We have been and are being sold out to the Chinese and much in the name of greed. The Clinton-Gore Administration has one of the worst "sell out" histories in all of our history.

I am currantly reading some great books on the history of the American Revolution, and realize how far down the ladder of greed we have come since those brave people created this wonderful country.
Great Book, ignored by media seeking PRC market2008-10-225 / 5
As a long-time fan of Gertz's work at the Washington Times, I had high expectations. "The China Threat" exceeded these.
I do think that a follow up is needed after 8 years of Chinese perfidiousness in trade and international affairs.

    A must read for insight on China's global economic presence2007-09-185 / 5
The food we eat. The tires we ride on. The toys our children play with. And much more. How did China get to be so powerful of an influence on global economics? "The China Threat" takes you through the critical political processes and decisions of several administrations that brought America as well as other countries to such dependency.
