Gauss's law for electric fields, Gauss's law for magnetic fields, Faraday's law, and the Ampere-Maxwell law are four of the most influential equations in science. In this guide for students, each equation is the subject of an entire chapter, with detailed, plain-language explanations of the physical meaning of each symbol in the equation, for both the integral and differential forms. The final chapter shows how Maxwell's equations may be combined to produce the wave equation, the basis for the electromagnetic theory of light. This book is a wonderful resource for undergraduate and graduate courses in electromagnetism and electromagnetics. A website hosted by the author at www.cambridge.org/9780521701471 contains interactive solutions to every problem in the text as well as audio podcasts to walk students through each chapter.

    Excellent guide for self-study of E&M2010-09-025 / 5
If you can get around the rather patronizing and repetitive tone of the author, this is an excellent self-study book for electricity and magnetism. The physics is solid as is the physical reasoning. I've suggested this book to a number of students who have had good success with the book. Worth taking a look at the sample pages (or the book in a bookstore) to decide if the level is appropriate to you. Should be completely reasonable with any college level mathematics.
There is NO better introductory book!2010-06-055 / 5
This book is fabulous. It was the first book to really give me the "deep feel" of the equations. Gauss' Law becomes especially simple to understand. Even though I had delved deeply into this subject in under grad, this was a refreshing new take.

    This book is a keeper.
    WOW...very very eloquent2010-05-215 / 5
I can just sit around and read this book..It's pure math but reads so easily.

Probably the best explanation of these equations ever put to paper. He breaks each equation down piece by piece so that you understand what each little piece means..then puts the equation back together and it hits you what it means..then you say "wooooooooow"...then he follows each chapter with a few math examples to cement it.

My friend is in MS in Physics (I'm a BS grad..never wanted to go to grad school)..and he looked at it..and said.."meh..elementary stuff"...uh..no...it might be "elementary"..
but I really think few physics peoples deeply understand the equations they use..they think they know them just because they can use them to calculate stuff...and plug and chug...

I only realized that after reading a few chapters of this book..now I can calculate stuff (as I was able to before), but also look at the equations and realize whats happening in real life.

    Very very good.
    Get Maxwell smart2010-04-105 / 5
In the preface, Daniel Fleisch reminds the reader that Physics World (Aug 2004) selected Maxwell's equations as "the most important equations of all time". Looking at our use of electronic technology, it is easy to appreciate that recognition.

So, what makes this study guide for Maxwell's equations the one to own?

The equations are the focus. Application and ease of understanding are the objectives. Each of the four equations are broken down into their individual symbols and explained. One equation per chapter. This study guide is concise yet descriptive. Maxwell in less than 144 pages. That's it.

Dr. Fleisch provides a helpful support website for his book with hints and full solutions for each of the exercises.

This is a first-class study guide for learning Maxwell's equations. It would be highly useful as a supplemental study guide for an engineering college course. That is why this study guide was my gift recently to a young undergrad electrical engineer. Of course, I then bought myself a copy for my engineering bookcase ...
    Great introductory book2010-03-205 / 5
This book is very simple to understand (as simple as Maxwell's Equations can get) and really hammers home the core concepts. I recommend it to any student who is taking an introductory course in EE or magnetism or related fields.
