Mende Nazer's "beautiful and at times heart-wrenching "account of her struggle to survive modern-day slavery (
The Washington Post)
At age twelve, Mende Nazer lost her childhood. It began one horrific night in 1993, when Arab raiders swept through her Nuba village, setting fire to the village huts and murdering the adults. They rounded up thirty-one young children, including Mende, who was eventually sold to a wealthy Arab family in Sudan's capital city, Khartoum. So began Mende's seven dark years of enslavement. Normally, Mende's story never would have come to light, but when she was sent to work for another master-a diplomat working in London-she made a dramatic break for freedom.
Published to critical acclaim for the honesty and clarity of its prose, Slave is a story almost beyond belief. It depicts the strength and dignity of the Nuba tribe. It recounts the savage cruelty of the secret, modern-day trade in slaves. Most of all, it is "a profound meditation on the human ability to survive under virtually any circumstances." (Publishers Weekly)

| The story is compelling. Mende's innermost thoughts are shared as she loses her family, suffers at the hands of a cruel 'master,' and ultimately finds freedom. The details of the Arab raid on her village are horrifying. Buy this book! |

The sad story of Mende Nazer sheds light into the unimaginable horrors that still take place today. However, it is also hopeful because Mende found people willing to help her and give her what she had been unhumanly deprived of. Her story is proof that there is still some hope for girls like her but that it cannot be achieved without hardwork.
This book is insipiring and it is our duty to know her story--it's a must! The first part of the book talks about Mende's childhood. It's a beautfil story of a culture from which little is known. The following part tells Mende's experience as a slave and how she was abused by the worst type of individuals. Mende was sent to the UK after 9 years where she finally gather courage and escaped. Mende had one small taste of kindness and that was enough to encourage her to leave behind her miserable live and her masters.
This book was amazing, the story is captivating and every page enriching. |

| Couldn't believe my eyes.... I wanted to believe this story is a hoax of James Frey porportions. It was gripping and heartbreaking, courageous and triumphant. Mende's life story is something I will always remember. My heart longs to do something to help the precious children who are still in slavery in Sudan. I will pray and what other action can be taken? |
| A Courageous True Story | 2009-12-12 | 5 / 5 |

| A sad plight for a peace-loving little Sudan girl whose life is turned upside down by Arabs who are Muslim like her, who prey on villages to take slaves. I thought this was an excellent read and very courageous to write. It is so unfair for another human to think they can cage and rule another person's life. Your heart will go out to her. She deserved to be a bestseller. How thrilling she got away. But there must be many of her left out there in homes in Sudan and neighboring countries. I had a hard time putting it down. |
